NSF: Human activities affect ocean temperatures and hurricanes

Sun Sep 17, 2006 at 12:56:29 PM PDT

While the front page is covers a story on George Bush's radical U-turn on global warming, this diary reports a devestating connection between human activity and hurricanes.  Unlike claims that real global warming problems will mostly surface 10 years from now, we may actually be experiencing some of problems with the stronger hurricane seasons today.

POLL: Reprove Rove

Fri Jun 24, 2005 at 09:47:39 AM PDT

You all have read or heard Karl's Roves comments that "liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers."  The comments are demonstrably false, and even in their silly talking points (via a tpmcafe comment), liberals are not asking for understanding for our attackers.

Just imagine if he had said something as controversial as "They are mostly a white Christian Party."

So, the poll is on how many conservatives will make statments like "He doesn't speak for me with that kind of rhetoric."

NSF: Arctic Warming May Be a Factor in Demise of Lakes

Mon Jun 06, 2005 at 06:46:54 AM PDT

Last week the National Science Foundation (NSF) sent out the following press release: Arctic Warming May Be a Factor in Demise of Lakes.

"According to researchers, rising Arctic temperatures over the past two decades appear to have thawed the ground enough to allow more than 125 lakes to drain into the soil and vanish. The new finding provides additional evidence that the 20-year-old warming trend documented in the Arctic is physically affecting the landscape. Further, the scientists say, the abrupt draining has the potential to alter entire continental ecosystems as migratory birds and other wildlife depend on the waterways."

All Saints Reading

Sun Nov 07, 2004 at 10:56:25 AM PDT

In the Anglican Church, the Book of Common Prayer provides a schedule of readings for each service.  One of the readings on All Saints Day, which was last Monday, is Luke 6:20-26.  However, many churches reread this passage on the first Sunday after All Saints Day, which is today.  So many Christians around the world are listening to passage below.

Jesus is not a Republican.

Sticks or Carrots for Chafee?

Fri Nov 05, 2004 at 09:40:32 AM PDT

On Wednesday, USA Today reported:

"Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee said he would consider switching parties if President Bush is re-elected.

'I'm not ruling it out,' Chafee told The Providence Journal."

So, the question is whether we should ask him nicely to switch or threaten to target him in 2006 if he doesn't switch.

Free Market: "Edwards Wins!"

Tue Oct 05, 2004 at 11:29:43 PM PDT

One way to determine who won the vice presidential debate, in a more or less objective way, is to consider how the free market responded to it.  Tradesports.com allows traders to buy and sell shares of the presidential candidates.  Though, I do not recommend people buy and sell on this market, especially if they are working or plan to work on a campaign, it is a pretty good indicator of which campaign has the momentum.  Immediately after the debate on Tuesday, shares of George W. Bush stock fell from 62.6 to 57.4, while shares of John Kerry stock increased from 38.0 to 40.0.  So, if you believe in the power of the free market, as Republicans so often claim they do, clearly John Edwards won this debate.

Now Sponsoring...

Wed Mar 17, 2004 at 12:36:53 AM PDT

Recent political ads by the Bush Administration have suggested that John Kerry consistently votes against defense spending, protecting the troops, and veterans' benefits.  Perhaps, someone in the Bush Administration should learn to use thomas.loc.gov.  Here is a short list of some of the bills that John Kerry has sponsored in the 108th:

S 1991 IS

Title: A bill to require the reimbursement of members of the Armed Forces or their family members for the costs of protective body armor purchased by or on behalf of members of the Armed Forces.

S.CON.RES.84

Title: A concurrent resolution recognizing the sacrifices made by members of the regular and reserve components of the Armed Forces, expressing concern about their safety and security, and urging the Secretary of Defense to take immediate steps to ensure that the reserve components are provided with the same equipment as regular components.

S 1634 IS (Co-sponsor)

Title: A bill to provide funds for the security and stabilization of Iraq by suspending a portion of the reductions in the highest income tax rate for individual taxpayers.

S.1112

Title: A bill to amend title 38, United States Code, to permit Department of Veterans Affairs pharmacies to dispense medications on prescriptions written by private practitioners to veterans who are currently awaiting their first appointment with the Department for medical care, and for other purposes.

S. 1386

To amend titles 10 and 14, United States Code, to provide for the use of gold in the metal content of the Medal of Honor.

I suppose one could argue the importance of this last one, but I think it still deserves notice.  These are just the bills he sponsored.  Everything I have read suggests that the rest of his voting record on these issues is solid too.  The Internet is going to be Bush's downfall.  It's becoming too easy to unveil his lies and manipulations.
