TX-Sen: Radnofsky (D) wins ABC News "World BlackBerry Type-Off"
Thu Oct 26, 2006 at 11:00:41 AM PDT
This is a really fun piece on Barbara Ann. It's from ABC World News Webcast. (Does anyone know if it aired on TV at all?) The contest pitted Barbara Ann against ABC's Mark Halperin.
Barbara's press release notes:
Radnofsky's secret technique involves using her thumb and index finger and touch-typing without looking at the keyboard. Pretenders to the throne typically depend on their thumbs and must look back and forth from the screen to the text.

The video points out that Barbara wrote her entire new book, The Dancer's Dead, in ten days on her BlackBerry! I have seen Barbara whizzing away on her BlackBerry, and she is truly amazing at it--just as she is so amazing in so many ways.
Let's oust Hutchison and make Barbara Ann the new U.S. Senator from Texas! For more info or to donate, visit radnofsky.com.

Dallas & Fort Worth papers praise Radnofsky in TX Dem primary endorsements
Thu Feb 16, 2006 at 01:59:22 PM PDT
Just got this by email from
Barbara Ann Radnofsky's Senate campaign on endorsements for the Texas Democratic primary. The Dallas paper is considered conservative, and the Fort Worth paper as relatively conservative, but they both have many good things to say about Radnofsky. Even though
Radnofsky has raised less money than Republican senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, I believe that endorsements such as these make Radnofsky's campaign even more viable by inspiring more people to contribute. For more about Radnofsky or to contribute, visit website (the first link above). She's got a great
issues chart up, showing the differences between her positions and Hutchison's.
The text of the endorsements is below the fold.
UPDATE: AustiNOLA Kos picnic postponed
Thu Oct 06, 2005 at 07:17:26 PM PDT
Update [2005-10-6 23:1:29 by roses]: I just got word that a couple of families
have decided to go to New Orleans this weekend to see about their belongings and bring what they can back here to Austin. So we'll postpone our picnic until they return. I'll post here when we have a new date for our picnic.
We'll be having an Austin Kos picnic this Sunday afternoon, October 9, with our NOLA friends, at my neighborhood park (near Southwest Parkway and Mopac). We have dibs on the covered pavilion there for the afternoon and evening. If you are not on my email list but are in the Central Texas area and would like to come, please email me for more details. (You can click on my username below to get to my email address.)

Have you read the Declaration of Independence lately?
Mon Sep 05, 2005 at 10:26:16 AM PDT
When a friend said that Katrina evacuees at the Austin Convention Center were hungry for copies of our nation's founding documents, I decided to print some out on my computer for them. So I reread the Declaration of Independence for the first time in a long time and discovered that it is so relevant today--this minute! I was going to cut and paste excerpts, but there's no point in doing that. It is nearly all relevant to the current
tyranny of our own King George, especially the list of the king's
"repeated injuries and usurpations." (Emphasis throughout is mine, but it's worth reading the whole thing.)
Please follow me below the fold--I couldn't fit any more text here.
Austinites: help peace vets aid Katrina victims in La.
Sat Sep 03, 2005 at 10:07:56 AM PDT
Austin dKos members, here's our chance to help out Katrina victims in a very direct way, through the Veterans for Peace Impeachment tour. These are the same fine people who transported Cindy Sheehan in and out of Crawford and were in Austin last week, when they announced that they would travel to Louisiana to deliver 10,000 pounds of leftover supplies that had been donated to Camp Casey in Crawford.
The VFP has opened a soup kitchen in Covington, La. As of last night, the report from Covington was
"There is no government here! The Louisiana National Guard is not here. Only we are here and the people of this community are in distress" (
VFP Soup Kitchen Now Open in Covington, LA!).
Details on how to help, from right here in Austin, below the fold.
Update [2005-9-3 13:44:12 by roses]: I have corrected diary intro now that I have (a little) more info about who is in Covington.
Austin Kos meets this Sunday
Fri Jul 15, 2005 at 10:41:05 AM PDT

Now that the awesome Democracy Fest has come and gone, we've recovered and are ready for some unadulterated socializing... well, we probably won't be able to keep ourselves from doing
some plotting and scheming for progressive goals, but we always have fun doing that too. Plus lots of new people have expressed an interest in Austin Kos, so here's your chance to meet the people behind the usernames.
If you're in Austin or nearby, please join us at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, at the Texas Chili Parlor, 1409 Lavaca. We'll be there at least a couple of hours and possibly longer, so stop in later if you can't be there at 3 p.m. A few more photos below the fold (click for larger image).

Quick list of DemFest blogging links

Cross-posted at BooMan Tribune and MyDD
We've all been so busy at Democracy Fest here in Austin, and the wi-fi on the Huston-Tillotson campus was spotty, so few have had a chance to write in-depth diaries yet. Expect to see them appearing over the next week or so, as attendees get home, absorb, and find time to write. In the meantime, you can satisfy your DemFest curiosity at the links listed below the fold, listed roughly in order of amount of DemFest material. Scroll down on each site--I didn't make links to each post, and some sites have multiple posts. If you know of other links, please add them in the comments. Links below the fold...
Kossacks' Guide to Democracy Fest w/Poll
Thu Jun 16, 2005 at 11:18:18 AM PDT
YOUR GUIDE TO DEMOCRACY FEST
We're excited that so many Kossacks are coming to DemFest. Here are some things you might like to know.
First off, it's going to be hot. I'm talking about the weather. We're going to have unseasonably hot temperatures (or I should probably call them "seasonable global warming temperatures"). High 90s are predicted. So some suggestions:
- Dress for comfort: wear casual, cool clothes that you don't mind sweating in.
- For outdoors, even if only for 10-15 minutes in the heat of the day, I recommend a hat and sunblock.
- Carry a light jacket or sweater for air-conditioned places (someplace, including city buses, often have their AC set to freezing temperatures).
- Take plenty of water with you if you go for a walk or hike--and eat first (at least that always helps me endure the heat; I get loopy in the heat on an empty stomach).
- Avoid outdoor activities in midday heat--unless the activity involves cooling off in a pool or swimming hole!
Now for DemFest itself... Read below the fold for all the stuff we have planned just for Kossacks and other bloggers!
Austin Kossacks meetup: Sunday, June 5, 3 pm
Wed Jun 01, 2005 at 09:19:38 AM PDT
E pluribus chili
Yes, it's that time again. Austin Kossacks will meet on this Sunday, June 5, 3 pm, at the
Texas Chili Parlor, 1409 Lavaca.
If you haven't been to one of our meetings yet, first and foremost we have fun. So don't be misled by the agenda posted below the fold. We have an especially busy meeting because we have a lot of planning to do for our Bloggers' Caucus and our dKos/bloggers table at DemFest. Not to mention that we are preparing to help elect Texas Democrats to the U.S. Senate (Barbara Radnofsky) and as governor (Chris Bell). And more!
See below the fold for info on DemFest for out-of-towners, plus our Sunday meeting agenda.
Austin Kossacks meetup: Sunday, May 15, 3 pm
Tue May 10, 2005 at 02:41:39 PM PDT

Austin Kossacks have a lot to talk about. So we're meeting at Austin's traditional liberal watering hole--
Scholz Garden, 1607 San Jacinto--at
3 p.m., Sunday, May 15. All Kossacks are welcome! If it's too hot, we'll move indoors, so look for us inside if you don't see us outside.
On the agenda:
Planning for Democracy Fest
For those who haven't heard of
Democracy Fest yet, check it out. Our very own
Markos will be there, as will
Jerome from MyDD. Besides
assorted Kossacks, other people you may be interested in will be there too, such as
Howard Dean, Jesse Jackson Jr., Jim Hightower, and
Molly Ivins. You'll learn how to turn red states blue, and with breakfast tacos, barbecue at Stubb's, a CD of workshop materials, and a T-shirt included, it's a bargain at $55. Plus, on Sunday there will be a
breakfast with Markos and Jerome ($16, separate registration). All in the blue oasis that is Austin.
You may be able to get free lodging with Austinites in their homes (see below the fold). Register soon--DemFest is filling up!

Austin Kossacks' First Meetup: Report and Photos
Mon Apr 11, 2005 at 06:52:15 PM PDT

Kossacks in Austin TX got together for the first time face-to-face on Saturday afternoon, April 2. We met at the legendary watering hole for Austin liberal politicos:
Scholz's is strategically located just a few blocks north of the (to some, infamous)
Texas state capitol:

And it's just a few blocks south of the
University of Texas:

Seven Kossacks attended (a few others who couldn't make it were there in spirit). Report of meeting (governor's race, Dem Fest, planning for future meetups, etc.), with photos of Austin Kossacks, after the jump...
Austin Kossacks unite! April 2, 2pm, Scholz's
Mon Mar 28, 2005 at 12:32:08 PM PDT
Yes, that's right. At 2 p.m. this coming Saturday afternoon, Kossacks of Austin TX will meet in person at Scholz Beer Garden--outdoors of course. I'll have a sign/card on the table with some mention of "Kos" on it so we can find each other. And
if you have a digital camera, please bring it! I would like to post a brief diary with photos on dKos afterwards.
I'm looking forward to meeting y'all. Let's start plotting and help Mindmouth get some respect for Texas!
(As proof that Texas is (almost) a whole other country, bagpipers start playing at 5 p.m. at Scholz's. If we stay that long, we'll probably be ready for them...)
Calling all Kossacks in Austin, Texas!
Mon Mar 21, 2005 at 08:06:11 AM PDT
Every time I see photos posted of other Kossack get-togethers, I've been envious. I think it's high time we Kossacks in Austin get together face to face. A few Austinites have responded to comments about this that I've posted in others' diaries on dKos, but I know there are bound to be lots more of you out there.
Weekends are better than weekdays/weeknights for the people I've heard from so far. So I'm thinking maybe a Saturday afternoon at Austin's classic politico gathering spot--Scholtz's beer garden. Is this Saturday too soon? Let me know what y'all think! And please e-mail me if you want to be on a list to get notices and reminders of get-togethers.
A couple of other notes to Austin Kossacks. In case you don't know yet, tmccann has set up a Yahoo group for Texas Kossacks. Also, in case you missed it yesterday, Janet Strange posted a great diary about the Austin peace march, with photos.
English vicar on US election: "The whole world is watching"
Sat Oct 30, 2004 at 12:55:25 PM PDT
Circulating by email via Richard Rusk of Georgia, son of Dean Rusk, is the following letter from Reverend Dr. Peter Crick of Bristol, Great Britain. I spoke with Richard on the phone today to verify the vicar's letter (email me if you want Richard's email address). The letter presents an interesting and compelling perspective from outside the U.S. Here's the opening:
This Englishman, an Anglican Minister by trade, has seen many American elections from afar, but I now watch this current electoral contest pitting Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry with a morbid fascination. My wife Valerie, myself, and many of our countrymen are mystified by this 2004 campaign and worried by its potential outcome. This will be decided on November 2. How could you possibly consider re-electing this man?

Family members and others call for immediate 9/11 inquiry
Tue Oct 26, 2004 at 09:40:34 PM PDT
From
911truth.org, dated 10/26/04:
An alliance of 100 prominent Americans and 40 family members of those killed on 9/11 today announced the release of the 911 Truth Statement, a call for immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur....
Focusing on twelve questions, the Statement highlights areas of incriminating evidence that were either inadequately explored or ignored by the Kean Commission, ranging from insider trading and hijacker funding to foreign government forewarnings and inactive defenses around the Pentagon. The Statement asks for four actions: an immediate investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, Congressional hearings, media analysis, and the formation of a truly independent citizens-based inquiry.
Signers are listed at the same URL. Formal complaint to be filed at Spitzer's office in Manhattan on 10/28. More...
