Reid said the party is standing "with the people we have always stood with: seniors, students and the hardworking families of America. We intend to tackle the issues that matter most."
Now I'm quoting from memory, because I don't want to pay $49.95, but Rush's comments were:
"There you have it folks. Harry Reid is standing up for the losers in life. He is going to stand with life's losers. That's who the Democrat Party stands with, and they want more and more of you to join them as losers...."
THAT is the extent of hubris from the neocon side. They think that they have convinced their partisans that they somehow, are different from the other victims of the Bush administration. They are somehow more...moral and just. Their travails, the crumbling society and infrastructure, the outsourcing of their careers, the robbery of their pensions, is just a force of nature. Climate change, however, is not. They do not see themselves when Rush and the neocons disparage them. What a huge swath of society Rush insulted! Our venerated elderly! Our true American backbone-the working class families! Dedicated students searching for knowledge! How do they not see themselves in this? I guess the propaganda is really that good.
Meanwhile congress spends another day, another week , another month doing nothing to ameliorate conditions in our nation. Odds are if our taxes build a new school or provide new equipment to law enforcement or the fire department, it will be in Iraq before it's on Main Street.
Rush and his ilk have so tweaked the sensibilities of these folk that they don't even recognize themselves when Bushco holds up a mirror. They are the direct losers in all this, but can still feel like a winner. Just vote republican. Easy, huh?
Congress just voted today to praise our mighty air pilot warrior president. Huzzah. But consumer confidence remains acceptable, the market gains triple digits (ignore the losing days)and the whole wheezing calliope jangles a little farther down the road.
